What will Genesis be in 2021?

In March of 2020, our entire drum corps activity was shut down in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. For the first time in our history, there was no drum corps during the summer…no buses, no food trucks, no gym floors, no revenues, and most importantly, no performers on the field together, living like rock stars and creating life long bonds. It has been a difficult road for all of the organizations that make up Drum Corps International, but just like all the obstacles we have faced in the past 49 years, we have faced this road together and are forging forward with plans to bring our activity back to full strength. The 2021 drum corps season won’t be “normal” and the summer tour won’t look the same as it has in the past. But what it will be is exciting, challenging, determined and just what is needed to heal our activity from the devastation caused by COVID-19. And we may just find, together, that our new experience this season makes drum corps even better than it ever was before!

Genesis will be a drum corps first! Bringing drum corps to the field in 2021 is our priority. Our ensemble will produce an entertaining World Class level production that will stand on its own in a competitive or exhibition format and that connects to the Genesis brand, our alumni and our members. Our goal is to provide all the things we love about drum corps and eliminate as many “problem” areas as possible, for example… 10 hour bus rides. We will not expand our drum corps membership nor change our format. Genesis is a drum corps and we are rooted in all the rules and core competencies that have made us successful. We will not reinvent who or what we are, but simply HOW we do it. The Genesis creative team is hard at work creating an incredible production that will require the same level of education and execution as we have always expected, keeping in mind the challenges we face in rehearsal time and less performance opportunities. Genesis will provide all new instruments for our performers in 2021 with our new partnership with Pearl/Adams and we will produce a truly creative and fresh new approach to an old drum corps favorite. (show announcement to come in Feb.)

To accomplish this, the Genesis Plan will create a 4 week Spring Training Bubble at a facility in the Austin area, working with our local medical professionals and adhering to the strictest of CDC and pandemic guidelines and rules of the closed environment. As information evolves from December through April, we not only intend to adjust our plan but to also add live performances, competitions and a collegiate band camp tour to our summer program for our 3 week performance experience…all leading up to joining the rest of our fellow organizations for an incredible event in Indianapolis in August and completing our 7 week program. Our spring training will begin no earlier than June 18, 2020 and we will only travel if it meets the safest of guidelines and is in a strict, safe travel zone. Genesis is currently working with other the other great Texas drum corps to create regional events and a possible online performance series platform that will connect all the incredible drum corps from across the country without traveling. During our performance weekends, with safety and adherence to public distancing in mind, Genesis intends to perform for not only all of our friends and family, but also area school band programs so that our community can see live drum corps again this summer and our performers will have fantastic audiences to perform for.

While we do not have all of the answers or the final details at the moment, our world is still changing from day to day and we will spend tireless hours crafting and developing the best drum corps and educational experience that is possible in the wake of this pandemic. In 2020 we secured all new Pearl and Adams instruments for our students, invested in additional opportunities such as electronic and film education, invested in a new facility to better serve the safety and creativity of our organization and made improvements in our staff in order to expand our program and offer more opportunities to students. What we do know is that 2021 will be the safest, least stressful drum corps season and will connect Genesis to the Austin community and to more of our fans than we have ever been able to connect with before. Our performers will make history when they take the field this summer and will forever be known as the generation that saved our activity.

In addition to providing one of the best drum corps ensembles in DCI, Genesis will create experiences within our summer bubble, what we are lovingly calling Project Genesis, and will offer a robust series of educational options to more students in our community, connect our performers with professional musicians and educators through a series of performance projects and give our drum corps members teaching opportunities with younger students in and around the Austin area by creating younger ensembles rooted in the marching activity. One of the great projects this summer will be a professional recording session and the release of a Genesis Drum Corps Christmas album to be released during the 2021 holiday season. And of course, we will represent the Genesis brand at all levels of the 2021 DCI Drum Corps Event in Indianapolis.

As we have more details we will release them here and to the members that make up our 2021 team first. There will be drum corps in 2021 and Genesis will help lead the charge in creating an unforgettable experience.
