The 2022 Summer Performance and Clinic Tour

The Genesis DBC Performers Council and Educational Staff are proud to present a new venture for our program, The 2022 Summer Performance and Clinic Tour. From June 24th – July 10th Genesis Drum and Bugle Corps will be embarking on a tour through Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas on our way to our first DCI show of the season, Drums Along the Rockies in Denver, CO.

Over the past 2 years, we have all seen changes in our activity and have been forced to review our process and experience. At the conclusion of the 2021 season, our administrative team sat down with a select group of Performers and Staff to discuss the positives and negatives of the changes and challenges our organization faced in 2020 and 2021. We challenged ourselves with the question “How can we do our part to aid in the transition from the pandemic?” Additionally, we discussed what changes we wanted to maintain and how we wanted to approach the member experience going forward. As part of that discussion, we reviewed our organization’s mission and defined what we all felt was “our purpose” in the wake of the pandemic. Out of these discussions was born the Performance and Clinic Tour.

The purpose of this tour is multifaceted with a focus on giving back to communities who have seen a major drop in fine arts enrollment and those communities who gave to our program during a season that was so unique in 2021. One of the goals of this tour is to reach as many students as possible to show how valuable marching band to students and to build excitement for the schools ahead of their summer band season, especially those middle school and younger high school students who have not seen marching band or performance at this level in 2 years.

Through this tour, Genesis will be offering several opportunities for the host schools as well as all the surrounding community band programs. Leadership and Drum Major training and interactive rehearsals will be available to all host schools and all the surrounding area programs will be invited to an evening performance and clinic hosted by the 2022 Genesis DBC performing ensemble. All of the available opportunities will be completely free of charge to anyone who wishes to attend.

More details will be released soon including dates and performance times. Information will be posted on our social media platforms as well as our website so stay tuned to how YOU can catch Genesis on this unique summer experience tour!

2022 Senior Staff Announced

2022 Senior Educational Staff

Genesis is preparing for a stellar 2022 season and leading the way are many familiar faces in new roles and some new energy in our percussion program.

Leading the Senior Staff team is newly appointed Corps Director Charles Aguillon. The Director of Fine Arts for Lake Travis ISD in Austin, Mr. Aguillon is returning to Genesis for his 3rd season to lead and shape our educational team in to the future.

Art Cano will be leading our Brass program as Caption Head with Frank Solis serving as Assistant. Both have been with the Genesis program since its inception in 2009, serving in a variety of positions and dedicating their time and energies to building our educational and alumni programs.

Visually we are excited to welcome back Felix Hernandez in his new role as Visual Caption Head. In 2021 Mr. Hernandez served the Genesis program as a visual consultant and we are excited to welcome him back in a bigger role with the organization. Assisting Mr. Hernandez is long time staff member Eugene Castellanos Jr. Eugene has been a part of our visual program for several years and has been instrumental to building our visual education process over the past several seasons.

Returning for their 3rd season leading our Guard program is Alyson Downs and Oj Reyes. Our guard program has seen significant growth and execution under the guidance of Alyson and Oj and together they have built the foundation for which the Genesis guard will be defined for years to come.

In the land of Percussion we welcome back Carlos Botello as Battery Caption Head. Mr. Botello is entering his second season with the Genesis program and has been the key to shaping the vibe and performance level of our battery percussion program. The new addition to our Senior Staff team is Nathan Siegel. An established educator and percussion doctoral student at North Texas University, Nathan comes to Genesis to lead a front ensemble program that has seen tremendous growth and improvement since 2018.

“As we prepare for the 50th Anniversary of Drum Corps International, I am excited to be working side by side with some of the best in the marching arts. Their experience and leadership will make this season one to remember for our members.” – Corps Director Charles Aguillon

What Will Genesis Be 2021?

What will Genesis be in 2021?

In March of 2020, our entire drum corps activity was shut down in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. For the first time in our history, there was no drum corps during the summer…no buses, no food trucks, no gym floors, no revenues, and most importantly, no performers on the field together, living like rock stars and creating life long bonds. It has been a difficult road for all of the organizations that make up Drum Corps International, but just like all the obstacles we have faced in the past 49 years, we have faced this road together and are forging forward with plans to bring our activity back to full strength. The 2021 drum corps season won’t be “normal” and the summer tour won’t look the same as it has in the past. But what it will be is exciting, challenging, determined and just what is needed to heal our activity from the devastation caused by COVID-19. And we may just find, together, that our new experience this season makes drum corps even better than it ever was before!

To accomplish this, the Genesis Plan will create a 4 week Spring Training Bubble at a facility in the Austin area, working with our local medical professionals and adhering to the strictest of CDC and pandemic guidelines and rules of the closed environment. As information evolves from December through April, we not only intend to adjust our plan but to also add live performances, competitions and a collegiate band camp tour to our summer program for our 3 week performance experience…all leading up to joining the rest of our fellow organizations for an incredible event in Indianapolis in August and completing our 7 week program. Our spring training will begin no earlier than June 26, 2020 and we will only travel if it meets the safest of guidelines and is in a strict, safe travel zone.

As we have more details we will release them here and to the members that make up our 2021 team first. There will be drum corps in 2021 and Genesis will help lead the charge in creating an unforgettable experience. If you are interested in joining our team and enjoying the FENIXperience please check out our auditions page. If you would like to contribute to our 2021 recovery efforts please consider a donation at any level on our DONATIONS PAGE.

We look forward to seeing you this summer,

Genesis collaborates on holiday music during pandemic.

2020 Year In Review
DSC 0872It is a story that is really not much different than yours. 2020 kicked off with incredible promise and excitement in November of 2019. We saw record turn out for auditions and our organization was set up for the most successful season in our brief 11 year history. By February we had our team in place, had developed strong alliances with some incredible new sponsors, added more quality educators to our staff and were set to embark on our most robust season of education to date. And, just like your story, COVID-19 brought all of this excitement to a halt.

Over our 11 years we have faced many obstacles and challenges…we were prepared to face this pandemic. It would have been easy to close our doors and look to 2021, but our performers and staff told us a different story. We shifted focus and met almost daily in March to develop our plan. A collaborative idea started to come to life…and Project Genesis was born.
shutterstock 1401778256Project Genesis was developed as a collaborative “think tank” and combined ideas and input from our entire organization. We made investments in new technologies and options to serve our team during the shutdown. Among several projects we launched individual lessons for our members, commissioned new music from our creative staff for a Christmas album project and passed out 7 new pieces to our members, kept our staff in place and working, brought in clinicians for online masterclasses and brought our alumni together for a history documentary event. We also saw the need from our students for instruments at home to practice with.
mallet stationcollageGenesis made investments in new instruments and at home options to provide to our students who were in need. We provided all of the keyboard students and staff in need with Pearl MALLETStations to practice at home. We provided brass and percussion instruments to members not able to access these from their schools and made the investment in this without rental fees or impact to our students. We committed to our students only and did not open our options to the public and we did so in order to make sure that our 2020 team was given an experience unique to only them.
Now We Need Your Help
For the first time during this pandemic we are in real need of your help. The pandemic has gone on longer than any of us could predict. It has caused not only the cancellation of the 2020 season, but also several projects we had planned for October and November to create financial relief to our organization. Genesis is trying to raise $50,000 from now through the new year. This money will be used to start our 2021 educational season and allow us to continue offering options and instruments to our current and new students until it is safe for all of us to come together again. We hope you will celebrate the holidays with us by enjoying Bells – a collaborative project by the 2020 Genesis Drum and Bugle Corps. If you like what you hear and what we are trying to do we hope you will consider a donation to our fundraiser. Please take a few minutes and visit our donations page at genesisdbc.org/donation. You can donate at any level and in any amount you wish, including a monthly reoccurring option.
