Edward Gobbel Returns to Genesis as Corps Director
Edward Gobbel has had many roles with the Genesis organization. From 2011 to 2015 he was an instrumental partner and the heart in building the culture and focused energy of the corps as Education Director and Arranger, and has been a consultant for the organization since 2020. Mr. Gobbel returns to the corps to lead the next charge of building a diverse and high energy experience for our members!
Edward F. Gobbel – he/his
Armed with a two-valved, key-of-G mellophone bugle, Ed walked into his first drum corps rehearsal in 1989. Since June of 1990 when he got on that Glassmen tour bus for the first time, and ending in his 1994 age-out year with The Cadets of Bergen County, the performing and pageantry arts have been at the center of Ed’s professional and personal life.
Mr. Gobbel studied music education at Wayne State and Michigan State Universities before beginning his professional journey. All across the US, Ed served as an instructor, wind arranger, drill designer, and/or clinician for more than 50 high schools and universities. Most notably, Ed spent almost 20 years as an educator and consultant for BOA finalist American Fork High School in Utah. He works with band programs to increase their rehearsal efficiency, mentor drum majors and leaders, and assist with staff training and show design.
Over the last 28 years in DCI, he served as a brass educator for The Cadets of Bergen County and the Blue Knights as well as brass caption chair and brass arranger for the Troopers. Ed traveled to Medellin, Colombia as a guest clinician to work with the Gran Banda Drum and Bugle Corps. Joining the Genesis team in 2011, he served as brass arranger, brass caption chair, staff coordinator, long-haul red-eye truck driver, and Director of Education. Edward worked as an Educational Sales Rep for Summerhays Music in Salt Lake City, Utah before working as the Wind Instrument Product and Brand Manager at Jupiter Band Instruments in Austin, Texas. During his tenure at Jupiter, Ed led the team that designed and launched their debut line of marching brass instruments. Ed also served as the international manager of Altus Flutes, a Japanese hand-made professional flute company.
As an amateur radio operator and electronics hobbyist, Ed uses his skills as an educator to teach certification classes and is an FCC endorsed licensing examiner. For a short time, Ed even homeschooled his middle school son. Since 1987, Ed’s prolific and diverse experience as an educator and performer has maintained one common theme: creating experiences for students to discover themselves through performance.
Genesis Front Ensemble upgrades distance learning methods with Pearl malletSTATIONs
The Genesis Front Ensemble (Fenix Front) and the team at Pearl teamed up to help our students continue to learn and grow at home during the COVID-19 summer with Pearl malletSTATIONs.
Genesis DBC Front Ensemble Coordinator Andrea Walsh-It’s definitely been a great option for our members that are stuck at home without access to a keyboard. The students get to learn their notes, see the patterns that their hands are going to move in, and hear what the music sounds like no matter which instrument in the front ensemble they play. The malletSTATIONS have been a great flexible solution that allows us to continue educating our students from a distance.”
As part of the recently established partnership with Pearl/Adams, Genesis is looking forward to exploring the flexibility and options the malletSTATION provides. We plan to work with the team at Pearl to find new and exciting ways to utilize these devices both on-field and off.
Genesis enters exclusive partnership with Pearl/Adams for Brass and Percussion Instruments
Genesis Drum and Bugle Corps, Inc. is proud to announce an incredible new partnership with Pearl/Adams for the exclusive use of Adams Marching Brass with Pearl and Adams Percussion instruments. This new partnership brings together a titan in our industry and one of the “new kids on the block” in drum corps for the first time.
Genesis DBC Executive Director Chris Magonigal- “I have admired the Pearl brand since I was a performer back in the late 90’s. That brand always stuck out to me as the brand champions recognize as the best, and I was a brass kid. Now a bit older I still see the Pearl brand as THE brand in our activity and have recognized their commitment to quality and the dedication to their artists, which were the main factors in choosing Pearl/Adams over other bids. We are all extremely excited to be entering into this new partnership and to the future of our organization, especially in light of recent events in our country. To be able to continue to do business and provide our current and future students with this standard of equipment is such a positive message with all that we are facing in this world. Genesis will now be able to expand its mission further and provide offerings to more students through this partnership. To have a partner who is committed to helping students and sees the need to have young people succeed using the best instruments possible has been an incredible ray of light for our organization.”
Shawn Lafrenz, Sr. Marketing Manager for Pearl Corporation; “We are excited to partner with Genesis DBC. The driving force of the corps’ “Education Through Performance” philosophy is a perfect fit for the Pearl/Adams team of world-class artists and the championship design quality of our products. We look forward to the exciting results on and off the field with this new chapter for both organizations.”
From Austin Texas, Genesis recently celebrated its 10th anniversary season and is considered one of the up and coming organizations in DCI World Class competition. With the inclusion of a leadership curriculum drawing upon top training methodologies used in corporate America, the organization provides educational, cultural, interpersonal, physical and emotional growth necessary for our young people to become leaders.
Pearl/Adams is the world’s leading percussion equipment manufacturer supplying the best quality instruments for professionals, ensembles, schools, and players of all ages since 1946. Adams Musical Instruments of Thorn, Holland added Marching Brass instruments in 2013 to its world-renowned product line of tuned percussion and Adams Custom Brass products. Adams Musical Instruments are exclusively distributed in the US and Canada by Pearl Corporation of Nashville, Tn.
The Genesis Drum and Bugle Corps FENIXgear store added new merchandise selections available for purchase today.
Previously, we used our online store to re-sell used equipment and uniforms. The summer has always been the drum corps’ prime time to sell merchandise. In light of the summer tour cancellation, pivoting the store online moved up on the priority list.
“We always enjoy seeing Genesis fans and families at our merchandise booth during the summer. Even though we can’t see everyone, we’re excited to give them access to designs our team’s been working on,” Chris Magonigal, CEO reflects.
Offerings include hoodies, hats, jackets, and more. All proceeds from the store go toward the organization’s operating expenses. Visit our store to see the new options today!
“We know this is a difficult time for everyone as we all respond to the COVID-19 crisis. The events worldwide have impacted Drum Corps International as well, forcing cancellation of the 2020 Summer Tour as of Wednesday, March 25.
DCI’s voting membership unanimously reached the difficult decision with great regret after thorough evaluation of numerous factors affecting participant health and safety, travel requirements, logistics, venue availability, and other associated issues. The membership also agreed that in order to preserve the opportunity for this year’s class of age-outs, performers will receive additional eligibility based on existing age requirements with a one-year extension.
Above all else, the entire DCI community remains unified in its commitment to preserve the health, safety, and well-being of everyone involved in our activity.
We share in the profound disappointment of the thousands of remarkable performers who will be unable to take the field this summer on the 2020 DCI Tour. We encourage every one of them to continue to commit fully to the pursuit of their personal best. We sincerely hope that corps members everywhere will continue to embrace the values taught through participation in the marching arts to remain motivated until we are able to perform together under the stadium lights once again.
We are extremely grateful for everyone who continues to support our participating corps — from the incredible teachers, designers, judges and administrators to the uniform, instrument and marching music products companies. We are fortunate to have a nationwide network of Tour Event Partners, band directors, schools and performance venues who keep the lights shining bright on our performers. Our most heartfelt appreciation also goes out to the countless staff, event staff, volunteers, health and wellness providers, and to DCI’s vast family of fans around the world, along with countless parents and alumni who have always been the unconditional allies of our performers.
DCI and all participating organizations will shift focus from tour preparation to addressing the sizable operational and financial challenges resulting from these extraordinary circumstances. In the coming weeks and months, DCI and the corps will work to develop the plans necessary to return to a full schedule in 2021.”
We will provide information soon on ways to help ensure that drum corps emerges from this crisis stronger than ever. Together, we will #MarchOn.
